Open Studio Hartford

November! Events coming up.

This year I’m happy to be participating in Open Studio Hartford, alongside over 120 other artists, musicians, poets and film makers! It’s their 21st year of hosting Open Studio and it is looking to be an event not to be missed!

I will be showing my work at the group show located at the Art Space Gallery in Hartford Connecticut. Opening reception is on November 4th at 6pm. It’s a great opportunity to preview the art of many of the artists that you will see during Open Studio. There will be refreshments, food and entertainment, all for free! What a great way to spend a Thursday evening. I will be there along with many of the other artists. I am proud to be one of a hand full of artists in this show that were picked by local poets to have a piece written about their painting. The poet Sherman Poultney chose my painting “Hook and Line”, which will be on display from November 4th till the 14th at the Art Space Gallery.

Open Studio Weekend will be on November 13th and 14th. Artist’s will be opening up their studios to the public. Imagine getting to see all these amazing artists work, and the space in which they create it! I’m certainly going to make time to visit them all. There are a lot of ‘visiting artists’ from the Hartford area that will be showing their work as well. I’m happy to say I’m one of them. Visiting artists will be showing their work at various locations in Hartford. You can find me at Art Space Hartford on the first floor. It’s a oportunity to see great art and purchase art as well. I hope to get the chance to see you there!

This month I’m part of a charity that is raising funds for the Richard B. Fried Fund which provides help to those battling AIDS and HIV.

On Saturday, June 19, 2010, we invite you to be part of the Connecticut AIDS Resource Coalition’s Art for AIDS fundraiser to benefit the Richard B. Fried Fund, CARC’s Endowment Fund. Our goal is to raise funds to help support people living with HIV/AIDS in Connecticut as we enjoy an evening of art, music, food, wine and dancing at ArtSpace in Hartford.

Special features of the event include, open wine bar, delectable appetizers & pasta stations by Salute restaurant, music by Jason Villani a.k.a. DJ Lord Lewis, Art Show/Sale and an exciting Art Grab featuring canvases donated by Jerry’s Artarama and designed by 100 local area artists.

Little painting I did today. Still getting use to photographing paintings. It’s not exact, and too sharp. I’ll try to get a better one later.

Shopping…

shopping for art supplies

It was so nice to get out today and go shopping for supplies! I picked out lots of paint, pens, canvas and paper. I had to blog about it, because it was so apperpoe that as I began my shopping, over the speakers began to play The Cure. It made me chuckle for personal reasons.

So, lots of sales, which was really really nice. Especially when you can get 200ml tubes for 3.99, and 60ml tubes for 1.99. All the brushes were 50% off. :D

The canvas was actually the hardest part of the whole thing. I always use to buy unprimed canvas. Then make the stretchers myself, stretch and gesso the canvas. It was so time consuming, but economical when I was in college. In fact I think it was required. I stuck with that method after college, but I vowed to myself that when I started up I would forgo that and buy pre-stretched. Problem is, it’s hard to tell which ones are really good, especially when they are all wrapped with huge labels. Some, the weave was crooked, others were incredibly loose (and I’m talking Windsor Newton). Yes, you can re-stretch them, but I was kind of hoping to cut down on the labor.

Anyway, I ended up getting a variety to try out. I have a sneaking suspicion that when all is said and done I’ll be buying the pre-made stretchers and the pre-primed canvas. (Make a note of it)I did find some cool clear gesso. The last time I bought it, it came in gallon jugs of white. I was looking for a clear sealer/primer. Lucky me.

Anyway tomorrow is a studio day! Hurray for that.

January Thaw

 easel

It was -2 the other day. Windy, cloudy and icy. We’ve had so many grey days lately. Uhg.

Today it was lovely out! Sunny, warm, and completely ‘go for a walk’ kind of weather. It was so nice to just be outside, and not need a jacket. The lovely thing is it is suppose to be warm the next few days too. Even getting into the 60′s. Not actually trying to blog about the weather here. Ha. Ha.

Anyway, seeing the sun shining into the studio makes me feel so much like creating. I was lucky enough to receive ‘studio shopping funds’ for Christmas this year. So, I’m thinking tomorrow I’m heading out to get supplies!! I’m really happy about that.

Just the other week, when it was too miserable to be outside, we started cleaning up the basement/cellar. Trying to get a familyroom, woodshop, and laundry room built in there. (And, why yes…we’ll be doing it ourselves. And, yes it will take longer than we think.) :)

It gave me a chance to look through some of my old work. And by old, I mean going back to JR. High! I don’t know why I didn’t get rid of some of it. It’s gastly. But, some of it is really kind of nice. I had been playing around in the studio a bit lately, trying to get comfortable again. I ended up doing something, and thinking I’d found a new direction. Buried in the old art, I found two pieces using the same ‘new’ direction. Something I hadn’t fully explored and had forgotten all about. Really a great feeling, to look back. And to have something looking forward.

So, it’s off to get supplies. Because for once…in what seems like a month, we have sun and it isn’t drizzling all day. And, it’s warm enough to not need to use heat in the studio. How lovely.

a beginning

paint

I’ve read blogs, commented on blogs..and generally thought them interesting. I was satisfied for a while to just have my little blog on myspace. Actually an artist friend of mine Natasha Newton just started a page here, and it intrigued me enough to start my own.

I just started getting back into being an working artist recently. I’m still in humble beginnings. Life’s responsibilities and blessings meant putting my full time creating on the back burner. Only last year did I really start to move in the direction of getting back into it. It started with building my art studio at our home. My family and friends put in many hours helping. I’ve learned a great deal now about construction. Enough to know that I don’t want to be in construction! But, after a year and a half of building the studio is finally done.

I’ve began moving in right before the holidays. Promptly had my first bout of ‘artist’s block’, and realized how supportive friends and family can be! Now that the holiday’s are over I’m going shopping for a LOT of supplies and should hopefully have things to show soon. I also set up a web site (still under development) where I can showcase my art. www.gwynethamy.com It’s a little ahead of things, but I figured it was easy enough to at least have it sitting ready for when I’m ready.

So here it is…a beginning. Welcome along.
